With Black Guy with a White Body, Boris Anje explores the instability of identity in a world saturated by signs, brands and constructed appearances. The title itself introduces a deliberate tension between body, perception and representation, inviting viewers to question how race, image and social value are visually produced.
The figure stands with quiet confidence against a surface filled with repeated graphic motifs and commercial references. Rather than presenting identity as fixed, Anje fragments and reconstructs it through colour, pattern and symbolic layering. The body becomes a contested visual territory shaped by aspiration, projection and contemporary consumer culture.
In resonance with Babacar Mbaye Diop’s reflections on African subjectivity and aesthetics, the work refuses reductive readings of Blackness. Instead, it proposes identity as dynamic, relational and continuously reinvented. The painting balances seduction and critique, exposing the pressures of visibility while affirming the subject’s autonomy and presence.
