In Mamy Nyanga, Ajarb Bernard Ategwa constructs a vibrant and fragmented vision of contemporary identity, where portraiture becomes inseparable from movement, memory and urban visual culture. The central figure appears both present and partially erased, her turquoise skin transforming the body into a symbolic field rather than a naturalistic representation. Behind and around her, fragments of another face, abstract gestures and tropical motifs collide in a layered composition that evokes the density of contemporary African city life.

The painting reflects Ategwa’s ongoing exploration of universality through abstraction. Rather than fixing identity through precise facial features, he allows colour, pattern and gesture to open the figure toward multiple interpretations. The result is a portrait that resists singular definition and instead embraces fluidity, transformation and emotional ambiguity.

Viewed through the philosophical lens of Babacar Mbaye Diop, Mamy Nyanga can be understood as an affirmation of African creativity as a living and evolving process. The work does not separate beauty from experience or aesthetics from social reality. Instead, Ategwa transforms the visual chaos of urban life into a joyful and poetic language where identity is continuously invented through colour, rhythm and imagination.
