In Double Iconic African Tree, Olivia Mae Pendergast reduces the landscape to a sequence of luminous thresholds: rose earth, ochre horizon, violet atmosphere and the burnt-orange silhouettes of two umbrella-canopied trees. The composition is strikingly frontal, almost emblematic, yet the surface remains alive with subtle traces of touch, abrasion and tonal vibration. Rather than describing place through detail, Pendergast lets color carry memory. The trees appear less as botanical subjects than as presences – fragile, upright, and quietly monumental – held between stillness and heat. Their extended crowns echo one another like forms of kinship, suggesting companionship across an open plain. In relation to the artist’s broader practice, often attentive to aura, background and the charged space surrounding a figure, this landscape feels similarly inhabited, even without human presence. The painting becomes a meditation on how place can hold dignity, silence and emotional resonance.
This original oil painting on canvas will appeal to collectors drawn to contemporary landscape painting where color, atmosphere and symbolic form transform nature into a site of memory and presence.
