In The Blue Spirit, Médéric Turay transforms a tall ceramic vessel into a contemporary totem. A mask-like presence occupies the body of the work, its asymmetrical face assembled through an intense blue eye, an almond-shaped gaze, exposed teeth and fragments of burlap. Floral motifs rise along the neck and reappear across the surface, softening the figure’s frontal power while suggesting growth, renewal and ritual ornament.
Blue dominates the composition, moving between turquoise, cobalt and black, while orange, red, white and copper accents create points of tension and light. The vessel’s elongated form gives the figure a guardian-like presence: at once object, body and spirit. Oil, oil sticks, acrylic, burlap and copper build a tactile surface in which painting and sculpture become inseparable.
The Blue Spirit is therefore more than a decorative object. Its layered materials and hybrid imagery bring ancestral memory into dialogue with contemporary gesture, transforming the ceramic form into a symbolic presence associated with protection, transmission and renewal.
