In Safety First, Boris Anje presents a figure suspended between glamour, vulnerability and self-construction. The subject stands before a dense arrangement of belts, accessories and decorative signs that transform the background into both marketplace and symbolic archive. Fashion here is not secondary to identity; it becomes the very terrain upon which identity is negotiated.
The striking green tonality destabilises naturalistic representation and introduces a psychological dimension. The figure appears almost icon-like, illuminated from within, while jewellery and clothing function as contemporary regalia. Through this visual strategy, Anje reflects on the tension between individuality and the pressures of visibility in a globalised image culture.
Echoing Babacar Mbaye Diop’s understanding of African aesthetics as inseparable from lived experience and social meaning, the work suggests that adornment can become a mode of resistance and affirmation. The painting celebrates self-expression while remaining attentive to the systems of aspiration, consumption and status that shape contemporary urban life.
