Xavier Sayago: Sculpting Movement and Memory from Reclaimed Metal

Xavier Sayago (b. 1981, Dissin, Burkina Faso) is a contemporary African sculptor whose work transforms discarded metal into expressive figures, animals and scenes of everyday life. Through welding, assemblage and an inventive use of reclaimed materials, he creates a distinctive sculptural universe in which industrial fragments acquire new identities, movement and unexpected vitality.

His practice belongs to a broader conversation within contemporary African art, where artists explore the relationship between material experimentation, memory and human experience. For Sayago, recycling is not simply a technical or environmental process. It becomes a means of reimagining familiar objects and revealing new possibilities within materials that have already lived another life.

From Discarded Objects to Sculptural Expression

At the heart of Xavier Sayago's artistic language lies a compelling dialogue between material, imagination and movement. Mechanical components, worn tools, chains, gears and fragments of iron are assembled into sculptures that seem animated by their own personalities. Birds with elongated silhouettes, musicians, travellers and figures in motion populate a world where humour, ingenuity and poetic observation coexist.

What distinguishes his sculptures is their ability to challenge the perceived limitations of metal. A material traditionally associated with weight and rigidity becomes an instrument of lightness, gesture and expression. Through open compositions and carefully balanced forms, Sayago creates figures that appear almost weightless despite their industrial origins.

Rather than concealing the history of his materials, the artist allows rust, scratches and traces of previous use to remain visible. These marks become part of the sculpture's identity, establishing a connection between an object's former purpose and its new artistic existence.

Materiality, Memory and the Art of Transformation

Sayago's work can be understood within the tradition of recycl'art in Burkina Faso, where recovered materials offer possibilities for artistic experimentation and reinvention. Yet his approach extends beyond the transformation of waste into art. His sculptures invite viewers to reconsider how value, meaning and identity can emerge from objects that have lost their original function.

In this sense, his artistic practice resonates with broader questions surrounding materiality in contemporary African sculpture. Discarded objects retain physical evidence of their previous lives, while the sculptor's intervention opens them to new narratives. The resulting works bring together craftsmanship, visual storytelling and an imaginative response to the material world.

These questions are explored further in OOA Gallery's editorial insight, Materiality and Transformation: Recycled Materials, Memory and Innovation in Contemporary African Art, which examines how artists use reclaimed materials to engage with memory, history and artistic invention.

Artistic Beginnings and International Development

Xavier Sayago's artistic journey began in the mid-1990s at Fondation Olorun in Ouagadougou, where he developed his knowledge of metal sculpture and arc welding alongside practising artists. This formative experience established the foundations of an artistic language rooted in technical experimentation, craftsmanship and the creative reuse of materials.

His early presentations included exhibitions at Fondation Olorun and the Salon de la Créativité of the International Arts and Crafts Fair of Ouagadougou (SIAO) in 2002. His work subsequently reached audiences beyond Burkina Faso through exhibitions and cultural projects in Ghana, Niger, Senegal and Europe.

In 2006, he participated in Dak'Art OFF in Dakar and co-founded Centre Lukaré in Ouagadougou, a space dedicated to artistic production, training and collaboration. Alongside his sculptural practice, Sayago has contributed to artistic exchange through workshops and educational initiatives in Africa and Europe.

Exhibitions and Collaboration with OOA Gallery

Over the course of his career, Xavier Sayago has exhibited across several European and African countries, including France, Spain, Belgium, Sweden, Côte d'Ivoire and Burkina Faso. His exhibition history reflects both the international circulation of his work and his continued connection to the artistic environment of Ouagadougou.

His longstanding relationship with OOA Gallery includes De la crasse à la classe, presented in collaboration with the Setba Foundation in Barcelona in 2013, African Recycl'Art in Barcelona in 2016, and the Sitges Recicl'Art Festival in 2018.

In 2026, his sculptures were included in Urban Markets at OOA Gallery in Sitges, alongside paintings by Larry Otoo and Ajarb Bernard Ategwa. Through figures of travellers, riders and musicians, Sayago's sculptural language introduced another dimension to the exhibition's exploration of urban life, movement and everyday encounters.

Through his combination of technical ingenuity, playful observation and sensitivity to the histories embedded in materials, Xavier Sayago contributes a distinctive perspective to contemporary African sculpture. His work reminds us that artistic transformation does not necessarily erase an object's past; it can give that past an entirely new form of expression.
